The Stable Population Party was due to be officially registered on July 24, but Julia Gillard rushed to an early election on July 17 and prevented us from standing candidates under our party name across Australia. It was therefore vital to use the election as a test run with two 'independent' candidates to broaden awareness of our brand, iron out the bugs and refine our message. We will now be officially registered as a party shortly after the 2010 federal election and be in a far better position to conduct a coordinated national campaign. Please see our News and Newsletter pages for further updates.
The Stable Population Party believes in a stable, sustainable, open and tolerant Australia.
Living on a fragile, arid desert continent, it is important for Australians to demonstrate global leadership in sustainable population management. In doing so, we can fulfil our responsibility to nurture and protect our part of the world, just as Indigenous Australians have done for tens of thousands of years.
Australia's extreme population growth of around 450,000 per annum (eight times the western world per capita growth rate) is causing and/or exacerbating most of our major economic, environmental and social problems. These problems are outlined on our About Us page.
Yet population growth is not inevitible. The Howard and Rudd/Gillard Governments, influenced by big business donors, have deliberately implemented policies that will deliver a population of 36+ million by 2050 and 100+ million by 2100 - way beyond our carrying capacity. Unfortunately, there has been ongoing indifference and lack of leadership and courage from many Greens leaders. The Greens claim to represent the environment, but put their social justice agenda ahead of Australia's national interest and our environment.
In 1994, the Australian Academy of Science held a conference to publicise its population enquiry findings: due to environmental constraints 23 million is the safe upper limit at which to stabilise Australia's population. As Australians see their quality of life deteriorating due to population growth pressures, this advice has proven to be very sound. We are now fast approaching this safe upper level, and Australians of all backgrounds are craving a rational and mature debate about population size - beyond the simplistic "stop the boats" and "sustainable Australia" slogans we are getting from The Coalition, Labor and The Greens.
The only sustainable Australia is a stable Australia.
Australians deserve choice and a stable population of around 23-26 million through to 2050. We can largely achieve this outcome with two simple policies:
Phase out the baby bonus
Reduce immigration to around 50,000 per annum
For a full list of our policies, please see our About Us page.
Australia can also demonstrate global leadership by supporting other countries experiencing rapid population growth. Our foreign aid should focus on women's education and family planning programs.
At the next election, you can vote to protect our environment, focus on per capita GDP growth, relieve our over-stretched infrastructure and pass on our quality of life.
Population is the debate Australia has to have - and it won't go away.
"I have never felt more strongly about an issue. This new political party is a good thing."
Dick Smith
Businessman, Conservationist
"Population increase suits governments wanting to please the business community now, by doing something the full cost of which will only emerge over the next 20, 30, 40 or 50 years - far beyond the attention span of three-year governments."
Mark O'Connor
Writer, Environmentalist, Co-Author of Overloading Australia
"Population is the debate Australia has to have."
William Bourke
Businessman, Stable Population Party convenor
"With a population of 22 million, the deterioration in the quality of life in our cities is already obvious. Populate and we will perish."
Barry Cohen
Hawke Government Minister
